Charles Babbage
Charles Babbage (1791-1871) was an English mathematician, philosopher, inventor, and mechanical engineer who originated the concept of the digital programmable computer. Called the 'father of the computer,' he designed the Difference Engine for automated polynomial calculation and the more ambitious Analytical Engine — a general-purpose machine containing memory, a CPU, input/output, and conditional branching. Neither was completed in his lifetime, yet all essential ideas of modern computers are found in his designs.
