Hero of Alexandria
Hero of Alexandria (c. 10-70 CE) was a Greek engineer and mathematician active in Roman-era Alexandria. He devised an extraordinary range of mechanical devices — the steam-powered aeolipile, the world's first vending machine, a wind-powered organ, and automatically opening temple doors. Called 'the greatest experimentalist of antiquity,' he demonstrated the power of steam two thousand years before the Industrial Revolution.

In ancient times, writings were generally inscribed on bamboo strips; those using silk cloth were called 'paper.' Silk was expensive and bamboo heavy — neither was convenient. Cai Lun then conceived the idea of making paper from tree bark, hemp waste, old cloth, and fishnets.
