Hero of Alexandria (c. 10-70 CE) was a Greek engineer and mathematician active in Roman-era Alexandria. Hero of Alexandria built machines powered by steam, compressed air, water, and gears that anticipated technologies of the Industrial Revolution by two millennia. Had ancient society adopted his inventions as power sources rather than spectacles, the course of civilization might have been fundamentally different.
Almost nothing is known about Hero's life. Estimates for his dates range from the 2nd century BC to the 3rd century AD, but a lunar eclipse mentioned in his Dioptra has been matched to one in 62 AD, placing him in the 1st century. He is believed to have taught at the Mouseion of Alexandria — the scholarly institution that included the famous Library — as some of his writings resemble lecture notes and textbooks.
His most celebrated invention is the aeolipile, or 'Hero's engine': a sealed sphere partially filled with water, heated to produce steam that escaped through two L-shaped nozzles, spinning the sphere by reaction — the principle of the rocket engine. It is considered the earliest recorded steam engine, though it was used as a novelty rather than a practical power source.
Hero's other inventions were equally remarkable. He designed a system where fire on a sacrificial altar heated a sealed vessel, using air pressure to move water whose weight pulled a rope to open temple doors automatically. He described the world's first vending machine: a coin-operated device that dispensed a fixed amount of holy water. His wind-powered organ was the earliest known wind-driven machine. He even created fully mechanical theatrical devices that ran for ten minutes using cylindrical gears and a binary-like system of knotted ropes.
As a mathematician, Hero is remembered for Heron's formula — calculating a triangle's area from its three sides. His Metrica is an important work of applied geometry, and he wrote a commentary on Euclid's Elements.
Much of Hero's writing was lost, but portions survived through Byzantine manuscripts and Arabic and Latin translations. His devices were used in ancient society for entertainment and religious spectacle — never adopted as industrial power. The prevailing explanation is that abundant slave labor eliminated the economic incentive for mechanization.
Hero's work represents one of the most suggestive cases in the history of technology: the vast gap between what is technically possible and what society chooses to adopt.
