Charles Babbage (1791-1871) was an English mathematician, philosopher, inventor, and mechanical engineer who originated the concept of the digital programmable computer. Charles Babbage embedded every essential concept of the 20th-century digital computer into 19th-century mechanical engineering. Had his Analytical Engine been built, the computer revolution might have begun a century earlier.
Babbage was born in 1791 in London, the son of a wealthy banker. Mathematically gifted from childhood, he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, where he co-founded the Analytical Society with John Herschel and George Peacock to modernize British mathematics education.
Frustrated by errors in mathematical tables, Babbage conceived the idea of automating calculation by machine. In 1822, he built a small working model of his Difference Engine — a device that computed polynomial values using the method of finite differences — and demonstrated it to the Royal Astronomical Society. The British government invested 17,000 pounds, but the project was never completed, defeated by the limitations of contemporary machining precision and Babbage's own restless design changes.
Babbage's true revolution, however, lay beyond the Difference Engine. From around 1837, he designed the Analytical Engine — a general-purpose computing machine programmed via punched cards borrowed from the Jacquard loom. It incorporated a 'store' (memory), a 'mill' (arithmetic logic unit — the CPU), input/output mechanisms, and punched-card program control including conditional branching and loops. Every essential element of a modern computer was present.
Ada Lovelace published annotated notes on the Analytical Engine in 1843, including an algorithm for computing Bernoulli numbers — widely considered the first computer program. Lovelace also foresaw that the engine could be applied beyond numerical calculation to music composition and logical operations.
Babbage's interests extended far beyond computing. His 1832 book On the Economy of Machinery and Manufactures was a pioneering work of industrial economics. He contributed to cryptography, railway engineering, and statistics, and was a central figure in London's intellectual social scene, hosting celebrated Saturday evening soirees.
Babbage died on October 18, 1871, aged seventy-nine, his computing machines unfinished. In 1991, London's Science Museum constructed Difference Engine No. 2 from Babbage's original plans. It worked perfectly — proving that 19th-century manufacturing tolerances would have been sufficient to build it, and that Babbage's design was sound all along.
