Kōkichi Tsuburaya
Born in Sukagawa, Fukushima Prefecture in 1940, Kokichi Tsuburaya won bronze in the marathon at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics as a member of the Japan Self-Defense Forces. His return to the National Stadium in third place moved all of Japan, but the pressure of expectations for the next Olympics and chronic injuries drove him to take his own life in 1968 at twenty-seven.
