Descended from four generations of church musicians, he studied at the Milan Conservatory and created operas of unmatched melodic beauty and dramatic intensity. La boheme, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and the unfinished Turandot are among the most frequently performed works in the entire operatic repertoire. He died in 1924, aged sixty-five.
