Eli Whitney (1765-1825) was an American inventor who created the cotton gin in 1793, dramatically accelerating the separation of cotton fibers from seeds. While his invention transformed the Southern cotton economy, it also deepened dependence on slave labor and became a remote cause of the Civil War.
