1809年生于汉堡，早期浪漫主义作曲家、钢琴家、管风琴家与指挥家。祖父为犹太人哲学家摩西·门德尔松。他是十几岁便创作弦乐八重奏与《仲夏夜之梦》剧乐的神童，并以复演巴赫《马太受难曲》成为巴赫再评价的先驱。他创立了莱比锡音乐学院，《e小调小提琴协奏曲》是浪漫主义最受喜爱的协奏曲之一，38岁早逝。
