音楽は曖昧すぎると人はしばしば不満を言う。言葉なら誰でも分かると。しかし私にとっては全く逆だ。私が愛する音楽が表現するのは、言葉にするには不明確すぎる思考ではなく、逆に明確すぎる思考なのだ。
People often complain that music is too ambiguous... whereas everyone understands words. With me it is exactly the reverse... what the music I love expresses to me are thoughts not too indefinite to be put into words, but on the contrary, too definite.

Felix Mendelssohn
1809年ハンブルク生まれ、初期ロマン派の作曲家・ピアニスト・オルガニスト・指揮者。祖父はユダヤ人哲学者モーゼス・メンデルスゾーン。弦楽八重奏曲や劇音楽『真夏の夜の夢』を10代で作曲した神童であり、バッハの『マタイ受難曲』の復活演奏でバッハ再評価の先駆者となった。ライプツィヒ音楽院を創設し、ヴァイオリン協奏曲ホ短調は最も愛されるロマン派の協奏曲の一つ。38歳で夭折。
